#24 Cardinal Upset by Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Stephanie Rogers scored a career-high 22 pointsas Santa Clara defeated No. 24 Stanford 81-65 Friday night, beating theCardinal for the first time in 13 years.

Jessica Banford added 18 points and Annie Garrison had 17 for the Broncos(5-0).

Lindsey Yamasaki scored a career-high 32 points - 21 in the second half - tolead Stanford (2-5), which was playing its first unranked opponent of theseason. Carolyn Moos added 18 for the Cardinal.

Santa Clara's previous victory over Stanford was on Nov. 26, 1985, in TaraVanDerveer's first season as the Cardinal coach.

It was also the first time the Broncos defeated a ranked opponent since a68-61 victory over Washington on Dec. 19, 1994, when Santa Clara beatWashington, 68-61.

The victory also extended Santa Clara's home winning streak to 20 games, oneaway from the school record.

Santa Clara opened a 23-point lead 1:50 into the second half when Rogersconnected on her third 3-pointer of the night. Stanford closed to within 16with 6:32 left to play, but Banford hit two consecutive 3-pointers.

Stanford missed its first eight shots of the game, and the Broncos tookadvantage by building a 13-2 lead five minutes into the first half. Santa Claraincreased its lead to 19 by halftime as Rogers scored 14 first-half points on6-for-8 shooting from the field.

The Broncos shot 50 percent in the first half, and held the Cardinal to justover 32 percent.
