Cardinal Escape With Victory over Huskies

January 30, 1999

SEATTLE, Wash. - Washington's 18th-ranked men's tennis team lost to No. 1 ranked Stanford 4-3 this afternoon. It was Stanford's first-ever visit to Seattle to take on the Huskies in the Nordstrom Tennis Center. The three points the Huskies tallied today matched the amount the Cardinal gave up last season. Stanford won three matches with 6-1 scores last year. The loss drops Washington's record to 1-23 in the all-time series dating back to 1921.

The Huskies were unable to take advantage of winning the doubles point early and winning the first set in three singles matches. Washington's Eric Drew and Robert Kendrick upset the fourth-ranked doubles team in the nation in K.J. Hippensteel and Ryan Wolters, 8-5, to hand them their second loss of the season. The win moves Drew into sixth-place on Washington's career doubles wins list with 52 wins. Christoph Kull and Nick Quatrochi defeated Stanford's 20th-ranked Geoff Abrams and Alex Kim 9-7 to clinch the doubles point.

The eighth-ranked Kendrick defeated fifth-ranked Ryan Wolters 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to improve his record to 10-2 and 3-0 in the No. 1 singles slot. Drew (4-0) moved into a tie for sixth-place on Washington's career singles wins list with a 7-6, 6-7, 6-3 win over 35th-ranked Geoff Abrams. He has 67 career singles wins.

"It is good for people around here to see Washington gain on other schools that have been strong historically," says head coach Matt Anger about the match against the defending national champion. "However, I am disappointed in the opportunities not seized today. We let a couple of matches get away from us."

"We were very lucky," said Stanford head coach Dick Gould as he exited the Nordstrom Tennis Center.

Washington faces No. 25 California tomorrow at noon in the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
