TULSA, Okla. -- Stanford shot a 304 Wednesday on the first day of the NCAA Women's Golf Championships to start in sixth place, 16 shots behind leader Duke, at the Tulsa Country Club. Sophomore Hilary Homeyer (Edina, MN/Edina HS) shot a four-over 75 to lead the Cardinal, which is only four shots out of second place. Homeyer is in a 12-way tie for 12th in the individual standings.
Grace Park of Arizona State, the only player to break par, is the overall leader at two-under 69. Top-ranked Duke counted scores of 71, 72, 72 & 73 on the very difficult course to take a 12-stroke lead over the rest of the field after the first of four rounds.
Also for Stanford, sophomore Stephanie Keever (Las Vegas, NV/Cimarron-Memorial HS) and junior Julie Dunn (Las Vegas, NV/Bishop Gorman HS) fired first-round 76s to end up in a 16-way tie for 24th. Senior Michelle Sperry (Poway, CA/Poway HS) shot a 77 and is in a tie for 40th place, while junior JaeJean Ro (San Jose, CA/Valley Christian HS) is tied for 93rd at 84. While Duke has the early lead, there are seven teams all within five strokes battling for second place.
The teams will play another 18 holes Thursday. The second round will be broadcast live on ESPN at noon Pacific time. The NCAA Championships will continue with 18 holes Friday and 18 holes Saturday.
