OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Kris Weems hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:04remaining, and No. 4 Stanford withstood a last-second shooting flurry to beatCalifornia 57-55 Wednesday night.
Weems' 3-pointer was Stanford's first basket since Michael McDonald'sdriving layup with 12:25 remaining that put the Cardinal up 44-42.
With both teams in foul trouble and locked in a bitter defensive battle inthe second half, the bulk of the points in the final minutes came from the freethrow line.
Stanford point guard Arthur Lee picked up his fourth foul on a charging callwith 11 minutes left and didn't return until 4:40 with Stanford trailing 52-50.
Thomas Kilgore made one of two free throws and Raymond King hit a drivinglayup to put Cal up 55-50 with 3:30 remaining. But Peter Sauer and Tim Youngeach made two free throws, pulling Stanford to 55-54 and Weems then drained thedecisive 3-pointer.
With 10 seconds left, Lee missed a running jumper in the lane and SeanLampley got the rebound for Cal. After a timeout, Gill and Kilgore both threwup 3-point tries that missed and Carl Boyd's putback was waved off by theofficials because it came just after the buzzer sounded.
Weems and Mark Madsen finished with 15 points apiece to lead Stanford (19-3,9-1 Pac-10), which won its fifth straight against Cal (12-8, 3-7). Gill andKilgore also scored 15 points each to lead the Bears, who have lost seven of 10since a 9-1 start.
Madsen blocked Boyd's putback to start a fastbreak that Weems finished witha 3-pointer with four seconds left in the first half, pulling Stanford within38-37.
With Cal hitting 53.3 percent of its shots in the opening period, Stanfordhad trailed by as many as nine points. But David Moseley hit a 3-pointer andYoung made an 8-foot hook shot to close the gap to 29-25. After Lampley made apair of free throws for Cal, Stanford closed with a 12-7 burst, including sevenpoints from Madsen.
