STANFORD, Calif. (AP) - Kris Weems had 15 points and Arthur Lee added nineof his 11 points in the second half as No. 4 Stanford extended its winningstreak to nine games with a 71-62 win over No. 25 California on Saturday night.
Peter Sauer added 13 points for the Cardinal (13-2, 3-0 Pac-10), whichtrailed by two points at halftime. Thomas Kilgore tied his career high with 21points for Cal (10-3, 1-2) and also had eight rebounds. Geno Carlisle added 14points for the Bears.
0 Stanford, which is 57-5 at Maples Pavilion since the 1994-95 season, trailed30-28 at halftime but scored seven straight points to take a 35-32 lead twominutes into the second half. Cal never led again.
A running slam by Mark Madsen and a 3-pointer by Lee gave the Cardinal a42-36 lead and a basket by Weems gave Stanford an eight-point edge with 12:44left. Two steals and breakaway layups by Lee within a minute increased theStanford lead to 55-44 with 9:12 left.
Trailing 60-47, Cal scored seven straight points to pull within six with4:52 left. But Jarron Collins scored on a follow of his own miss and Weems hita 3-pointer with 3:12 remaining to choke the Bears' rally.
Kilgore had 11 points and Sauer had 10 in the first half.
Carlisle hit a long 3-pointer with three seconds left to give Cal itshalftime lead. It was just the second 3-pointer of the half for the Bears,while Stanford hit four 3-pointers in the first half.
The first half was a tight battle of outstanding defenses, with seven leadchanges. The biggest lead was five points, when Sean Lampley hit a shot to giveCal an 18-13 lead with 8:45 left in the half.
