Stanford, CA - The Stanford men's tennis team improved its record to 14-2overall and 5-1 in the Pac-10 as the Cardinal defeated Arizona State, 6-1,today at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
Stanford won the doubles point, despite falling to ASU in the number threematch. At number three, Stanford's Scotty Scott and David Hauser were down3-6 in the match, but came back to tie it at eight all. ASU's duo of CaseyWas and Jim Hammond won the tiebreaker to earn the win.
In singles, senior captain Ryan Wolters defeated Gustavo Marcaccio, 6-2,6-0 to capture the second Cardinal point. Alex Kim then won at number foursingles to put the Cardinal up 3-0 in the match. After Stanford's GeoffAbrams lost at number two singles, it came to the match at number threesingles. After clinching the first set in a tiebreak, freshman K.J.Hippensteel sealed the Cardinal victory at number two, 7-6, 6-4 over ASU'sAlex Osterrieth. The two most spirited matches of the day, at five and sixsingles, came after the Cardinal had already clinched the win. Stanford'sScotty Scott defeated Ed Carter, 7-6, 7-6 at number five. In the finalmatch, the Sun Devils' Hammond won the first set 6-3, but dropped thesecond 4-6 to Stanford's Ali Ansari. In the third set, Ansari was down1-5, but rallied back to tie the match at 5-5. Hammond won the next game,but again Ansari rebounded, tying the match. In the tiebreaker, it wasAnsari that came out ahead.
The Cardinal remains home tomorrow as Stanford hosts Arizona. Stanfordconcludes its regular home season next week as they host Pepperdine onTuesday, April 13 (1:30 pm), USC on Friday, April 16 (1:30 pm) andSaturday, April 17 (noon).
