SEATTLE - The Stanford men's tennis team coasted to its sixth win this season and its 44th straight dual match victory today as the Cardinal defeated South Carolina, 5-1, in the quarterfinals of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship. Stanford, the number one seed in the tournament, is 6-0 this season, including yesterday's 5-1 victory over Oklahoma.
Today, the Cardinal won the doubles point behind top efforts at number one and three doubles, allowing the Gamecocks a combined five games. In singles, Stanford won four matches in straight sets, but lost at number six singles. Alex Kim's match at number four singles was not completed as the Cardinal had already clinched the match.
Stanford will face Illinois at noon (PST) tomorrow in the semifinals. Tomorrow's match is a preview of next weekend's action on the Farm as Stanford hosts Illinois on Friday, February 26 at 1:30 pm at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The Cardinal is the only seeded team remaining in the championship bracket. The Cardinal has won the ITA Indoor title on nine occasions in the 24-year history of the tournament. Stanford is the defending champion.
