BERKELEY, Calif. - Senior shortstop Katie May hit a grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift 17th-ranked California to a 6-3 victory over No. 15 Stanford and a doubleheader sweep of the Cardinal Saturday on Levine-Fricke Field.
The Bears, who captured the opener, 7-1, have now won eight consecutive games and 10 of their last 11. They closed out the regular season with a 44-19 overall record and a 13-14 mark in the Pac-10. Stanford fell to 40-23 and 10-18. Both teams are expecting to receive at-large berths in the NCAA Tournament, which will be announced late Sunday afternoon.
In the opener, Stanford catcher Kellie Wiginton homer over the left field fence to give the Cardinal a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
However, the Bears answered with seven runs in the bottom of the first to take command. Left fielder Paige Bowie led off with a home run to right to tie the score. Right fielder Maiko Bristow then singled. Two outs later, designated player Holly Yost singled home Bristow. First baseman Kirsten Drake singled, followed by a walk to third baseman Candace Harper and a two-run single by May for a 4-1 lead. Ninth-place hitter Amber Phillips singled over first base to plate another run, and Bowie then had a two-run single for a 7-1 lead.
Cal freshman Jocelyn Forest tossed the first four innings to pick up the win, while Yost came in for the final three innings to earn her first save of the year. Stanford's Marcy Crouch fell to 21-12 with the loss.
In the night cap, Cal scored single runs in the second and third innings. In the second, Harper walked, advanced to second on a sacrifice, and came home on a Bowie single. The Bears nearly repeated the performance in the third inning as second baseman Lisa Iancin singled, went to second on a sacrifice and scored on a single by Yost.
Stanford scored all three of its runs in the seventh inning to take a 3-2 lead. A hit batter, a single and a fielder's choice loaded the bases with one out. Crouch knocked in the first run with a ground out, and third baseman Christine Chao brought home the next two with a sharp single to right.
However, in the bottom of the seventh, catcher Megumi Takasaki walked and went to second on a single by Yost. Harper then walked to load the bases with two out. May followed by hitting an 0-1 pitch that cleared the center field fence for her third home run of the season.
Cal sophomore Nicole DiSalvio won her sixth straight decision to improve to 16-10, while Stanford's Becky Blevins fell to 19-11.
