PORTLAND, OR --- Stanford University improved to 2-0 on the young season with a 27-12 victory at Portland State (0-1) in Pacific-10 Conference action on Saturday night at Stott Center. The match was the conference opener for both schools.
The Cardinal took control early by winning theree of the first four matches, including one by default and one by forfeit, then put things away by taking three of the last four. Stanford led 15-3 after four matches, thanks to an 8-1 decision victory by heavyweight Andy Hunter (Sacramento, CA/Hiram Johnson HS) over Dan Wiley, a forfeit at 125 and a default at 133. After the Vikings cut the lead to 15-9, 157-pounder Beau Weiner (Placerville, CA/Ponderosa HS) put the Cardinal back on the board with a 16-0 technical fall victory over Ron Holyoak. Stanford then put the match away when Warren McPherson (Hillsboro, OR/Hillsboro HS) defeated Travis Morgan 12-3 at 165 pounds, and Shane Cross (Douglas, WI/Douglas HS) beat R.J. Gillespie 8-2 at 174 pounds.
Stanford returns to action on Sunday, November 29 when it travels to No. 13 Oregon State at 2:00 p.m.
