STANFORD, Calif. - Junior guard Milena Flores recorded seven steals and 16 points to lead the Stanford women's basketball team over Arizona State, 73-58, Saturday night at Maples Pavilion.
The Sun Devils took an early 9-5 lead. Cardinal freshman Enjoli Izidor then drew a foul on a post move and made the extra point to give Stanford a 10-9 lead. That play was part of a 10-0 Cardinal run that put the home team ahead for the duration of the contest. Izidor finished the night with a double-double, registering career highs in points, with 12, and rebounds, with 13.
Four other Stanford players reached double figures in points. The Cardinal received a strong defensive effort by freshman forward Cori Enghusen, who posted six blocks.
Arizona State was led by guard Leaf Newmans 20 points. The Sun Devils guards got into early foul trouble and were unable to establish their game. Arizona State also played without head coach Charlie Turner Thorne, who remained in Arizona as a precautionary measure, as she is due to give birth within the next two weeks.
The Cardinal remains above .500 with a 11-9 overall record, 7-2 in the Pac-10. Arizona State falls to 8-10, 2-7 in league action.
Stanford heads to the East Bay and will play California at 7:30 p.m. on Fri., Feb. 5. The Cardinal will remain on the road the following weekend, playing at UCLA and USC. Stanford returns home Feb. 18 vs. Washington.
