Women's Basketball Falls to Duke

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Michelle VanGorp had 28 points and seven rebounds asNo. 4 Duke rallied to beat No. 19 Stanford 77-57 Saturday in the consolationgame of the Four in the Fall tournament.

The Blue Devils, who returned all five starters from last season, trailedthroughout the first half against the younger Cardinal, but pulled away in thesecond half.

Payton Black had 15 points, Georgia Schweitzer 12 and Peppi Browne 10 forDuke (1-1).

Stanford (0-2) was led by Carolyn Moos with 16 points and Sarah Dimson with10. Freshman Lindsey Yamasaki had 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Led by Black with six points, the Blue Devils went on a 10-0 run to take a47-38 lead early in the second half. Stanford had a pair of consecutive3-pointers to keep it close, but Schweitzer had two 3-pointers of her own andthe Blue Devils once again had a nine-point lead at 53-44.

With only one senior on its roster, Stanford struggled to close the gap butsimply couldn't keep up - and Duke pulled away.

Both teams had sluggish starts. Stanford took an 18-10 lead on ChristinaBatastini's shot from the top of the key with 10:31 to go in the first half.But Duke climbed back, tying the score at 20 on Black's jumper and free throwwith 7:56 left.

The Blue Devils took their first lead of the game, 26-24, on a pair ofVanGorp free throws with just more than four minutes left. But the lead wasshort-lived, as Stanford scored five consecutive points and went on to take a29-28 halftime lead.

VanGorp led all scorers at the half with 14 points.

Duke was trounced by No. 3 Connecticut, 104-74, in the tournament opener atSan Jose Arena on Friday night.

Stanford opened its season with a 76-71 loss to No. 18 Arkansas, setting upthe championship game Saturday between the Huskies and the Lady Razorbacks.

Duke finished 24-8 last season and earned an NCAA tournament berth, but wasousted in the regional final by Arkansas.

Stanford finished last year at 21-6, but was upset by Harvard in the firstround of the tournament.
