Women's Basketball Handles Arizona State

TEMPE, Ariz.- The Stanford women's basketball team never trailed enroute to an 81-61 Pac-10 win over Arizona State Thursday night in front of 2,086 fans tonight at Wells Fargo Arena. Arizona State's record now stands at 11-13 overall, 5-10 Pac-10, while Stanford improves to 16-10 overall and 12-3 in conference play.

Freshman forward Bethany Donaphin recorded a double-double, with a team-high 14 points and game-high 11 boards to lead Stanford. Junior guard Milena Flores also posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 assists. Carolyn Moos and Lindsey Yamasaki were also in double figures, with 12 and 10, respectively for the Cardinal.

Only two Arizona State players scored in double figures, while as a team, the Sun Devils shot 33 percent from the field. Sophomore guard Leaf Newman led the team with a game-high 15 points, nine coming from three-point field goals. Newman shot 3-for-6 from the three-point line and grabbed four boards. Junior guard Kitch Kitchen also scored in double figures, with 11 on the night. Kitchen also recorded four assists. Junior Kristine Sand tallied six points and six rebounds, while sophomore guard Natalie Tucker recorded six points, six assists and four rebounds. Tucker turned the ball over only three times.

The Sun Devils never led, trailing by as much as 21 in the second half. Stanford came out strong, going on a14-4 run the first four and a half minutes of the game. Senior guard Regan Freuen put the Cardinal up by 15, their biggest lead of the half, with a three-pointer at the 6:28 mark. The first half ended with a monster three-pointer by Kitchen at the buzzer, cutting the Cardinal lead to nine. Freuen finished the game with eight points and three assists.
