STANFORD, Calif. - Former Stanford star Anne Kremer defeated 14th-ranked Dominique Van Roost
Monday to highlight the first round of play at the Bank of the West
Classic, held at Stanford's Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
Kremer, who led the Cardinal to the 1997 NCAA team title as a freshman,
then turned pro during the summer of 1998 after her sophomore year, is
making her second appearance in the Bank of the West. Two years ago,
playing as an amateur, she upset 10th-ranked Mary Pierce at Stanford.
Monday Kremer won the first set 6-0 and led 1-0 in the second when Van
Roost retired due to a neck injury.
"I thought she was going to be tough," Kremer said of Van Roost. "I didn't
know she was injured when I stepped on the court. I was expecting a very
tough match, but it was easier than that, obviously. She definitely wasn't
at her best."
Kremer, who had never played Van Roost before ("But I'd seen her on t.v.
before and I thought she was pretty good") advances to the second round of
the $500,000 tournament, and will play again Wednesday or Thursday. Kremer
beat Monica Seles on the way to the quarterfinals at Eastbourne earlier
this year and is currently ranked a career-best 34th in the world.
Also in the main draw of the singles, Chanda Rubin defeated Irina Spirlea
6-4, 6-4; Amy Frazier defeated Anke Huber 6-2, 6-4; and Lisa Raymond
defeated Cara Black 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Stanford sophomore-to-be Gabriela Lastra just missed making the 28-person
main draw of the tournament. Lastra lost 7-5, 6-3 to 47th-ranked Anne
Gaelle Sidot, the top seed in the qualifying, after beating Erika de Lone
and Pavlina Stoyanova to advance to the final round of qualifying. Fabiola
Zuluaga, Maureen Drake and Tamarine Tanasugarn also won qualifying matches
Monday to advance to the main draw. Stanford senior-to-be Teryn Ashley
lost to Stoyanova in the second round of qualifying, and Stanford graduate
Julie Scott lost to Jane Chi in the second round of the qualifying.
Tuesday's afternoon session begins at noon. On court 1, former French Open
champ Iva Majoli meets Sandrine Testud, Sidot plays Corina Morariu, Barbara
Schett and Patty Schnyder play Rubin and Testud, and Former Stanford star
Katie Schlukebir and Frazier meet a doubles qualifier. On court 2, Chi
meets Katarina Srebotnik, Zuluaga meets Tanasugarn, and Srebotnik and Tina
Krizan meet Mary Jo Fernandez and Raymond. Tuesday night's evening session
begins at 7:30 p.m., featuring Anna Kournikova versus Mirjana Lucic,
