SPARKS, Nev. - Thomas Murley, a fourth-year Stanford junior, set the Nevada course and meet record (four miles) to lead the nationally-ranked Cardinal men's cross country team to victory in the fourth annual Nevada Wolfpack Invitational on Saturday.
Murley ran the course in 20:51.00 as six Stanford runners captured the first six places. Only a 35 second spread separated runners 1-through-5 for the Cardinal on a perfect day (clear, sunny, no wind, 65 degrees) for distance running.
All seven Stanford runners ran together in first place through two miles. Murley then moved ahead and held his position to the finish line.
The Cardinal men tallied 15 points to easily defeat Bay Area rival California. The Golden Bears scored 49 points.
The Stanford women, ranked second in the nation, tallied 27 points to win the team title. California finished second (49), while Nevada placed third (50).
Laura Turner, a Cardinal sophomore, led Stanford runners with a second place finish. She toured the 5,000 meter course in 18:47.00. Christy Villa of California won the individual title with a time of 18:44.00. Six Stanford runners placed in the Top eleven.
