SAN JOSE, Calif. - In a well-matched battle between the nationally ranked Stanford Cardinal and the San Jose State Spartans, neither team could get on the board. After going into two overtimes, the game ended scoreless to leave both teams with a 1-0-1 record.
The two teams combined for 47 fouls, 24 by Stanford and 23 by San Jose State. Each team also had one player receive a yellow card. The Cardinal outshot San Jose State 17-10, with junior midfielder Scott Leber leading Stanford with three shots. Senior goalkeeper Adam Zapala stopped the Spartans attack with five saves to keep the game scoreless.
Stanford will travel to Fresno next to participate in the Fresno Tournament. Friday, September 10, the Cardinal will take on Gonzaga University at 6 p.m. Sunday, September 12 Stanford will face off against Oakland at noon.
Previously ranked fifth in the Soccer America preseason polls, Stanford was moved to ninth in the poll after two games with a record of 1-0-1. UCLA, previously ranked at third, was moved into first with a record of 2-0-0.
