Field Hockey Team Beats Hofstra 4-1

Sept. 1, 1999

STANFORD, Calif. - Freshmen Dalinda Banuelos (Escondido, CA/San Pasqual HS) and Christina Williams (Columbus, OH/The Columbus Academy) scored in their first collegiate game and the Stanford field hockey team defeated Hofstra 4-1 to open the season at the Varsity Turf Field Wednesday afternoon.

Sophomore Erica Swesey (Cherry Hill, NJ/Bishop Eustace HS) opened the scoring, taking a pass from junior Michelle Scott (Chicago, IL/Latin School) and converting with 18:10 remaining in the first half. Banuelos, a two-time high school All-American, scored only 35 seconds later, taking the ball from midfield through the defense to the goal. Williams, also a high school All-American, scored her first collegiate goal with 8:47 remaining in the half.

Scott added a goal to her assist, scoring with 27:15 remaining in the second half. Hofstra foiled the shutout bid on a goal from junior Tara Sterlacci (Westbury, NY/Carle Place) on a penalty corner taken after time expired.

Dating to last season, Stanford has now won six straight games, and has won 11 consecutive home games, dating to Nov. 1, 1997. The Cardinal is 8-0 on the new Varsity Turf Field.

Stanford returns to action at home against Iowa Friday at 3:00 p.m. at the Varsity Turf Field, then meets Boston University Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Both the Hawkeyes and the Terriers were nationally ranked in 1998 and will test Stanford's home winning streak. Hofstra will play California Friday at 1:00 p.m., also at Stanford's Varsity Turf Field.
