Women's Soccer Concludes Trip With Big Win Over USF

Sept. 12, 1999

Hawaii - Freshman Becky Myers (St. Charles, Ill.) scored two goals and sophomore Martha West (Fort Worth, Texas) scored her third goal in as many games, as the 13th-ranked Stanford women's soccer team blew past the University of San Francisco 5-1 in Honolulu, Hawaii today. The win pushes the Cardinal's overall record to 3-1.

Another of Stanford's heralded freshman, Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, Calif.) gave Stanford an early lead in the 8th-minute. Wallis scored her first collegiate goal on a pass from senior Shauna Itri (Huntington Beach, Calif.), who tallied her first point of the year.

It was West's turn in the 30th-minute of play, when she dribbled through the Don defense to score her team-leading third goal of the season.

Myers collected the first goals of her collegiate career in the second half of play. The first goal came three minutes into the half when Myers headed in a corner kick, which was served up by sophomore Erin Maurer (St. Louis, Mo.). In the 67th-minute, Myers scored her second goal off a pass from West.

The Cardinal concluded the scoring when senior Catherine Bernard (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) netted her first goal of the season off a throw-in from junior Katherine Horney (Atlanta, Ga.).

For the game, Stanford out-shot USF 20-3 as senior goalkeeper Wendi Whitman (Tarzana, Calif.) received her first start of the season in the Cardinal goal.

Stanford will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 17, when they host the Stanford/Nike Tournament at New Maloney Field.
