STANFORD, Calif. - The California women's field hockey team beat Stanford on penalty strokes in a non-league game Sunday at Stanford's Varsity Turf Field. The Golden Bears and the Cardinal played a scoreless 70 minutes of regulation, then played an additional 30 minutes of overtime before going to penalty strokes. Cal made its first three strokes while Cal goalie Sarah Hoehn saved three of the Cardinal's first four attempts to clinch the victory.
The Golden Bears (6-2, 4-0 NorPac) put a lot of pressure on Stanford (3-5, 2-0) during the first 10 minutes of the game, earning four penalty corners, but could not score. After that, the tide turned Stanford's way, and the Cardinal out-shot the Bears 13-7 in the first half. Each team took three shots in the second half, and Stanford out-shot Cal 6-5 in the 30-minute overtime, which is played with seven players on a side, instead of the 11 per side used in regulation. With fewer players on the field, the game opened up more in both directions, but Hoehn and Stanford goalie Rebecca Shapiro (Baltimore, MD/The Park School) were more than equal to the challenge. Hoehn made six saves and Shapiro made 11 during regulation and overtime. Hoehn added three more stops during the penalty strokes.
The two NorPac rivals, who have combined to win every league title during the 1990s, are currently the only two undefeated teams in league play. The rematch will occur in Berkeley on Oct. 24 in a game that will decide the regular-season champion. Stanford will host the NorPac Tournament Nov. 5-7. The winner of the league tournament will meet the winner of the Atlantic-10 Conference in an NCAA Tournament play-in game.
The Cardinal returns to action next Saturday for a NorPac game against Pacific at 1:00 p.m. at Stanford's Varsity Turf Field. California plays Ohio University at Michigan Thursday at 4 p.m.
