Provo, Utah - Julia Stamps and Lauren Fleshman finished 1-2 to lead the second-ranked Stanford women's cross country team to victory on Saturday at the BYU Invitational.
The Cardinal tallied 31 points, compared to 33 for top-ranked and defending NCAA champion Brigham Young. Seventh-ranked Georgetown finished third with 64 points in the six-team event.
Stamps, a junior from Santa Rosa, toured the three-mile course in a time of 16:48.3. Fleshman finished second with a time of 16:48.7. The two Stanford runners finished ahead of the next four runners, all from BYU, in the closely contested race.
Mariel Ettinger finished seventh (17:16.7) and Caroline Annis placed tenth (17:22.5). Five Cardinal runners placed in the Top eleven.
The Cardinal men, ranked second in the nation, easily defeated three other teams as Gabe Jennings (19:51.9), Thomas Murley (19:52.3), Jake Maas (19:52.8) and Andy Powell (19:53.2) finished 1-2-3-4 in overwhelming the competition. The race covered four miles.
Stanford tallied 16 points, compared to runnerup BYU with 62. Six Stanford runners placed in the Top-10.
