Stanford Volleyball Sweeps Utah at Pac-10/Mountain West Challenge

STANFORD, Calif. - Senior Kerri Walsh (Saratoga, CA/Archbishop Mitty HS) had match-highs of 15 digs and 11 kills to lead seventh-ranked Stanford (7-1) to a 15-1, 18-16, 15-12 win over visiting Utah (8-4) on Friday night at the Pacific-10/Mountain West "Conference Challenge' at Maples Pavilion. In the opening match, No. 10 Brigham Young (7-1) swept California (4-5) 15-11, 15-8, 16-14.

The Cardinal jumped out of the blocks quickly in game one by hitting .556 (11-1-18) to the Utes -.053 (5-6-19). Stanford then jumped out to a 5-1 lead in game two, but Utah came all the way back to serve up game point. The Cardinal then rattled off three straight points to win the second game, and held on from there to post its sixth straight win overall, and 30th straight victory at Maples Pavilion.

Redshirt freshman Lindsey Yamasaki (Oregon City, OR/Oregon City HS) had a match-high five service aces for Stanford, while senior Sarah Clark (Kamuela, HI/Hawaii Prep) added 10 kills and six digs.

Sophomores McKelle Stilson (Orangeville, UT/Emery HS) and Adrianne Bradley (Castle Dale, UT/Univ. of Hawaii) led Utah with 10 kills apiece.

In the opener, BYU led throughout in the first two games and held off a late Golden Bear rally in game three to record its seventh straight win. The Cougars, who hit .333 in the match, were led by 15 digs and 12 kills from senior Caroline Bower (Pleasant View, UT/Weber HS) and 12 kills and five blocks by sophomore Nina Puikkonen (Murray, UT/Murray HS).

Senior Brook Coulter (Fort Collins, CO/Rocky Mountain HS) had 14 kills and junior Alicia Perry (Lakewood, CA/Lakewood HS) 11 digs and 10 kills to lead the Golden Bears.

The Pacific-10/Mountain West "Conference Challenge" concludes on Saturday night at Maples Pavilion as Cal takes on Utah at 5:00 p.m. and No. 7 Stanford takes on No. 10 BYU at 7:00 p.m.
