The Stanford men's soccer team defeated the Cal Poly Mustangs 3-2 in a tense game Friday night at New Maloney Field.
Cal Poly kicked in a quick goal 17 minutes into play from team scoring leader Anthony Dimech off an assist from Rob Helm. Stanford got on the board in the first half when a Mustang player accidentally bounced the ball into his own goal off a deflection from goalie Brenton Junge in the 30th minute.
Stanford came out strong in the second half when junior forward Brandon Garinger scored twice in the first two minutes of the half. In the first minute of the second half, Garinger scored off a cross from senior Gerard Davis. He scored again less than two minutes later off an assist from junior Scott Leber. Cal Poly was finally able to respond with a second goal in the 63rd minute with a goal by David Yosso from Anthony Dimech.
Brandon Garinger said, "A big part of the game, like in the Dartmouth game, was that in the second half we put the goals away early. We faced a hard working team, but the goals we scored were enormous."
Head coach Bobby Clark said, "We gave up a goal early, but then we got back in the game. But Cal Poly kept in the game, and it was a nervous last 20 minutes. Full marks to Cal Poly."
Stanford will remain at home to host conference opponent Sacramento State on Sunday, October 17 at 2 p.m.
