Field Hockey Team Tops Penn 2-1

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Senior Julie Gwozdz (Weston, MA/Phillips Academy) and junior Michelle Scott (Chicago, IL/Latin School) both scored in the final seven minutes to lead Stanford to a 2-1 win over Penn Friday evening in Philadelphia, Pa. Stanford improves to 6-6 on the year their second consecutive 2-1 win on a four-day, four-game trip to Pennsylvania. The Quakers fall to 2-8.

Leah Bills scored her team-leading fifth goal 15 minutes in to put Penn ahead. But Stanford fought back, and it finally paid off 58 minutes later. Gwozdz tied the game by converting a penalty stroke with 6:55 remaining. Scott then scored by finishing a two-on-one break with only 1:41 left to avert overtime and give the Cardinal the win. Both scored their third goals of the season, and both also scored for the second time in as many days. Gwozdz and Scott gave the Cardinal a 2-0 lead Thursday at Temple in a game that ended 2-1 in Stanford's favor.

The Cardinal returns to action Saturday with a NorPac Conference game against Davis & Elkins College at Temple (3:00 EDT) to continue a four-game Philadelphia road trip. Penn returns to action Sunday, hosting Bucknell at 2:00 EDT.
