BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The top-ranked Stanford women's cross country team, led by freshman Erin Sullivan, earned first place honors at the Pre-NCAA Meet at Indiana University on Saturday.
Stanford handled the women's field with a team score of 77 points, followed by BYU (116) and Colorado (123). North Carolina (209) and Kansas State (225) rounded out the top five. Fourteen of the nation's top 20 teams competed.
Colorado's Kara Wheeler won the individual title in 17:07.03 over 5,000 meters, narrowly defeating Stanford freshman Sullivan (17:08.27). Another Cardinal freshman, Lauren Fleshman, finished seventh (17:28.91).
The Stanford men's team, ranked second in the country, also earned first place honors in the 25-team competition. The Cardinal scored 126 points to withstand the challenge of Colorado (140). Arizona (186), Georgetown (194), and Arizona State (248) rounded out the top five schools. Fourteen of the nation's top 20 teams competed.
Jonathon Riley finished third in the race over 8,000 meters, finishing in a time of 24:10.31. Oregon's Steve Fein won the individual title (24:06.31). Thomas Murley, a junior, finished ninth (24:25.03) for the Cardinal.
