STANFORD, Calif. - Top-seeded Duke and Texas A&M advanced to tomorrow's noon final at the inaugural WingspanBank.com/WTT National Collegiate Tennis Championships at Stanford University's Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
Duke beat South Carolina 22-21 (7-3) in tonight's semifinals to advance. Texas A&M defeated LSU 29-20 in the other semifinal. Consolation play will take place before tomorrow's final, starting at 9 a.m.
After falling to Duke on day one, Stanford rebounded today to defeat a pair of Pac-10 rivals, USC and Arizona State. The Cardinal defeated the Trojans 29-25 in the early match before dispatching Arizona State 23-15 to advance to the consolation quarterfinals. Freshman Laura Granville has won all three of her singles matches in the tournament. This is the first collegiate competition for Granville.
This three-day, 16-team event, which is hosted by Merrill Corporation and administered by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), creates the unique scenario in which a co-ed national collegiate champion will be crowned in an NCAA-sanctioned sport.
In quarterfinal play held earlier today Duke beat Tennessee 27-22 and Texas A&M needed a Supertiebreaker to top Vanderbilt 24-23 (7-4). South Carolina beat Notre Dame 26-24 and LSU topped Mississippi 25-20 in the other quarterfinals.
Duke senior Doug Root gave the Blue Devils a boost today in men's singles, going 2-0 on the day. Texas A&M's Olivia Karlikova went 2-0 in women's singles today. The Blue Devils built a 20-14 lead after three sets and held off a late South Carolina rally, winning the Supertiebreaker 7-3 to clinch the win.
The field for the 1999 WingspanBank.com/WTT National Collegiate Tennis Championships is made up of sixteen of the top men's and women's NCAA teams based on their combined season-ending ITA rankings.
