STANFORD, Calif. - The top-ranked Stanford women's cross country team defeated several of the nation's top collegiate teams in impressive fashion in winning the team title at the 26th annual Stanford Invitational on Saturday at the Stanford Golf Course.
The Cardinal tallied 36 points, compared to runnerup and second-ranked Arkansas with 51. Fourth-ranked and 1997 NCAA champion Brigham Young finished third with 82 points, followed by fifth-ranked Wisconsin in fourth with 102 points. Eighth-ranked Kansas State rounded out the first five finishers with 132 points.
Four Stanford runners finished in the top seven, led by Julia Stamps with a second place finish in a time of 16:43 over 5,000 meters. Freshman Lauren Fleshman placed fourth in a time of 16:47.
Amy Yoder of Arkansas won the individual title in a time of 16:41, the second-best time ever on the Stanford course.
The Cardinal men's team, ranked second in the nation, took the team title with 37 points, compared to Pac-10 rival and eighth-ranked Arizona with 46.
Four Cardinal runners finished in the Top-10 to seal the Cardinal victory. Thomas Murley finished second in a time of 24:19 over 8,000 meters. Jake Maas finished fourth at 24:42.
Arizona's Micheil Jones won the individual title at 24:19.
