Field Hockey Team Falls 2-0 To Cal

Oct. 24, 1999

BERKELEY, Calif. - The No. 16 California women's field hockey team beat Stanford 2-0 at Kleeberger Field Sunday afternoon to win the NorPac regular-season title. Megan Sainsbury had a goal and an assist to lead the Golden Bears past the Cardinal for the second time this season. Cal beat Stanford 1-0 on penalty strokes earlier this season at Stanford.

The Bears, with their first national ranking in 17 years, scored less than three minutes into the game to take control. Sainsbury, the NorPac's leading scorer, added a goal to her early assist with just over 12 minutes left.

The two NorPac rivals, who have combined to win every league title during the 1990s, will be the top two seeds when Stanford hosts the NorPac Tournament Nov. 5-7. Both Cal and Stanford will receive a bye in the first round of the six-team tournament, advancing directly to the semifinals, to be played on Nov. 6. The winner of the league tournament will meet the winner of the Atlantic-10 Conference in an NCAA Tournament play-in game on Nov. 9.

The Cardinal returns to action next Saturday for a non-league game at Pacific at 1:00 p.m.
