Field Hockey Team Beats Cal Poly 8-0

Oct. 3, 1999

STANFORD, Calif. - Sophomore Erica Swesey (Cherry Hill, NJ/Bishop Eustace HS) scored three goals to lead Stanford to an 8-0 win over Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo Sunday afternoon at Stanford's Varsity Turf Field. Because the Mustangs are not an NCAA varsity team, Stanford's record remains 4-5 on the year. Cal Poly was playing its season-opener.

The Cardinal dominated from the start, out-shooting the Mustangs 38-0, but did not get on the board until Swesey scored with 7:20 left in the first half. Freshman Dalinda Banuelos (Escondido, CA/San Pasqual HS) scored 47 seconds later to make it 2-0 at the half. Swesey scored on an assist from senior Julie Gwozdz (Weston, MA/Phillip Academy) barely three minutes into the second half to make it 3-0. Senior Lindsey Dunagan (St. Louis, MO/St. Louis Country Day School), the Cardinal's leading scorer, converted a pass from freshman Amrit Chima (Ventura, CA/Buena HS), then Swesey scored her third goal less than two minutes later. Gwozdz scored on an assist from freshman Liz Ott (Watermill, NY/Southampton HS), Chima scored unassisted and sophomore Melissa Stai (San Diego, CA/Serra HS) deflected in a shot from Gwozdz to complete the scoring as the Cardinal's defenders were given a chance to play forward.

The Cardinal returns to action next Saturday for a non-league game against UC Santa Barbara at 11 a.m.
