Stanford, CA - The Stanford men's soccer team won the Stanford/Nike Tournament this weekend after a Friday win over Dartmouth 1-0, and a Sunday win over Harvard 4-0.
Stanford recorded four goals Sunday against the Crimson, the first coming in the first minute of play from an assist from junior forward Corey Woolfolk to sophomore midfielder Derek Shanahan. Stanford scored again in the 39th minute of play as Andy Hemmerich threw the ball in, and junior defender Chris Gores headed it past the keeper.
In the second half of play, the third goal for Stanford came in the 46th minute as junior midfielder Scott Leber kicked it in off an assist from Woolfolk and Brandon Garinger. The fourth goal was scored by Woolfolk in the 49th minute after taking a pass from Leber and breaking away to score.
The Cardinal had four players on the Stanford/Nike Tournament All-Tournament team, midfielders Ryan Nelsen and T.K. Inbody. Corey Woolfolk was named the Offensive Tournament MVP. Senior goal keeper Adam Zapala was named the Defensive Tournament MVP.
Zapala said, "Two wins is huge for us. It was difficult this weekend, because we didn't put our chances away, but most good teams will encounter that."
Head coach Bobby Clark said, "It was great to get everyone a chance to play. It gives lads who have been working hard a chance to get on the field. I think Chris Gores had a tremendous game, Corey Woolfolk, too. Those two are the players that stand out to me after this game. This is the first time we've beaten Dartmouth since I've been coach here, and we did it decisively."
The Stanford men's soccer team will travel to Colorado to take on Denver Oct. 8, and Air Force Oct. 10.
