Corvalis, OR - Senior outside hitter Kerri Walsh (Saratoga, CA/Archbishop Mitty HS) had a match-high 13 kills and an .800 attack percentage (13K, 1E, 15TA) to lead #2 Stanford (19-2, 11-1 Pac-10) to a straight-game 15-9, 15-4, 15-2 victory at Oregon State (8-13, 2-11 Pac-10) on Saturday at Gill Coliseum. The victory keeps the Cardinal one game behind first-place and #7 UCLA (21-1, 13-0 Pac-10) in the loss column (1.5 games overall), setting up a showdown between the teams on November 5 at Stanford.
"We will have to play well," said Shaw in reference to next Friday's showdown versus the Bruins at Maples Pavilion. "We need a strong week of preparation. This should be a great match. As a player, that's what you look forward to."
The Cardinal has now won 18 of its last 19 matches overall and eight in a row with the only loss in the stretch coming at UCLA in four games on October 7. Oregon State drops its sixth straight, while Stanford runs its all-time record against the Beavers to 30-0.
"Kerri Walsh had a pretty good night tonight," said Stanford head coach Don Shaw with a grin about his three-time All-American. "She is such an excellent all-around player. She's been so consistent for us all year."
Junior middle blocker Jennifer Detmer (Thousand Oaks, CA/Thousand Oaks HS) equaled a career-high with 11 blocks to lead the Cardinal to an overall block advantage of 15-4. Stanford has now recorded double-digit blocks as a team 14 times this season. The Cardinal also recorded its 14th match of the year with an attack percentage of .300 or better, outhitting the Beavers .418-.073.
Sophomore outside hitter Lindsey Yamasaki (Oregon City, OR/Oregon City HS) had a productive evening in front of many of her local Oregon fans with eight kills and a .636 attack percentage (8K, 1E, 11TA). Freshman outside hitter Logan Tom (Salt Lake City, UT/Highland HS) added eight kills as well.
"Lindsey Yamasaki had a nice game tonight, as did our other players from Oregon in Jaimi Gregory and Emily Lawrence," Shaw added. "It was nice for them to play in front of some of the fans from their home state."
Walsh, who started off brilliantly with an attack percentage of 1.000 (7K, 0E, 7TA) in the first game, also finished with six blocks. Tom added five blocks.
Oregon State was paced by freshman outside hitter Katrina Nelson (Vancouver, WA/Prairie HS) with nine kills.
