The Stanford men's soccer team defeated California, ranked No. 19, 1-0 tonight at the Cardinal's last conference match of the season. It was also the last home game of the regular season, and a special ceremony was held at the beginning of the match to honor the six Stanford seniors, Gerard Davis, Brandon Garinger, Chris Gores, Andy Hemmerich, T.K. Inbody and Adam Zapala.
To make the night even more special for senior defender Gerard Davis, he scored the only goal of the game to win the match 1-0 off a free kick in the 68th minute. Tonight's goal was the second of Davis' career.
Although Stanford could only post one goal against the Golden Bears, the game was a lopsided one, with Stanford taking 15 shots to Cal's four. However, Cal's goalie came up with four big saves for the Bears. Cal also had five yellow cards, four assessed in the second half.
Head coach Bobby Clark said, "We turned in a complete performance. There was only one team on the field. The only disappointment is that it wasn't reflected in the goals. This was a comprehensive victory."
Although Stanford finishes its conference matches 5-1-1, the Cardinal will play three more matches in the regular season, including a match Tuesday against No. 13 Santa Clara on Tuesday, Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m., and No. 10 St. Louis on Nov. 7 at the Cal Adidas Legacy Classic.
