STANFORD, Calif. - Freshmen Amanda Billmyer (Berwyn, PA/The Episcopal Academy) and Christina Williams (Columbus, OH/The Columbus Academy) each had a hat trick to lead the Stanford field hockey team to a 10-1 win over UC Davis. Because Davis is a club team, the result does not count on Stanford's record.
The Cardinal freshman class dominated on senior day, scoring the first seven goals and eight overall to give four Cardinal seniors a victory in their final home regular-season game. Mallory Chambers (Tulsa, OK/Holland Hall), Lindsey Dunagan (St. Louis, MO/St. Louis Country Day), Julie Gwozdz (Weston, MA/Phillips Academy) and Sarah Medeiros (Davis, CA/Davis) all started their final regular-season game at Stanford's Varsity Turf Field. The Cardinal will host the NorPac Conference Tournament Friday-Sunday, however.
Freshman Amrit Chima (Ventura, CA/Buena) got things underway, scoring off a penalty corner five minutes into the game. Billmyer and Medeiros assisted. Billmyer then scored three goals in less than eight minutes, then Williams took over, scoring three of her own in six and a half minutes. Sophomore Erica Swesey (Cherry Hill, NJ/Bishop Eustace), freshman Liz Ott (Watermill, NY/Southampton) and Medeiros concluded the scoring. UC Davis got a goal from Carrie Pascoe on a penalty stroke with 13:30 to play. It was the Aggies' only shot, while the Cardinal fired 76.
The Cardinal returns to action next weekend in the NorPac Tournament, to be played at Stanford's Varsity Turf Field beginning Friday. The Cardinal has a bye Friday but will meet either the University of the Pacific or Davis & Elkins College next Saturday at 2:30 p.m. The winner of the league tournament will meet the winner of the Atlantic-10 Conference in an NCAA Tournament play-in game on Nov. 9.
