Los Angeles, Calif. - Sixth-ranked Stanford was upset by #9 UCLA in a first-place showdown between the Pac-10 heavyweights on Thursday at Pauley Pavilion. UCLA extends its winning streak to 11 straight matches, while Stanford had its 10-match winning streak snapped. Sophomore outside hitter Kristee Porter paced the winners with a match-high 21 kills and also hit for a .400 percentage. Stanford senior middle blocker/outside hitter Kerri Walsh (Saratoga, CA/Archbishop Mitty HS) led the Cardinal with 14 kills.
UCLA captured the first two games of the match by scores of 15-8 and 15-9. Stanford then rallied for a 15-9 victory in game three before the Bruins closed out the Cardinal in game four, 15-3.
The Bruins also had big performances from senior middle blocker/outside hitter Tamika Johnson (13 kills) sophomore outside hitter Ashley Bowles (12 kills, 12 digs) and freshman outside hitter Lauren Fendrick (11 kills). Sophomore setter Erika Selsor posted a match-high 54 assists.
Sophomore middle blocker Tara Conrad (Torrance, CA/West HS) and freshman outside hitter Logan Tom (Salt Lake City, UT/Highland HS) contributed 12 and 11 kills for the Cardinal, respectively. Stanford used both junior setters Lindsay Kagawa (Albany, CA/Albany HS) and Robyn Lewis (Long Beach, CA/Long Beach Poly HS).
UCLA held a distinctive advantage at the nets, picking up 12.0 team blocks to only 5.0 for the Cardinal. The Bruins also outhit Stanford, .293 to .178.
Stanford will continue its Southern California road swing with a match at #17 Southern California on Friday (7:00 pm).
