Men's Soccer Routs Denver, 5-2

Denver, Colo. - Stanford opened MPSF Conference play Friday night at Denver with a 5-2 win over the Pioneers.

Team scoring leader Luke Rust kicked in the first goal for Stanford in the 20th minute off an assist from Ryan Nelsen and Corey Woolfolk. Denver hit in a goal off their own deflection later in the 20th minute, putting Stanford up 2-0 in the first half.

In the 57th minute, Woolfolk received a long pass from Scott Leber, and was able to shoot past the Denver goalkeeper to score the first goal of the second half. Denver was finally able to answer with a goal in the 60th minute by Chad Watts. Stanford retaliated with another goal by Rust from Andy Hemmrich.

Denver got its second and last goal from Brian Todd, who lead the MPSF in scoring with 10 goals coming into the Stanford game. Freshman Roger Levesque scored the first goal of his collegiate career off an assist from Todd Dunivant to make the final score 5-2.

Rust, who was fourth in the MPSF in goals scored and scoring leaders with four goals coming into the Denver game, now has six goals this season in nine games. Goalkeeper Adam Zapala, who was sixth in the MPSF in saves, posted three saves on the evening against the pioneers, giving him 31 in the season.

Stanford's win over Denver improved the Cardinal's record to 6-2-1, 1-0 in the MPSF. Stanford will remain in Colorado to play Air Force on Sunday, Oct. 10 at 1 p.m., MDT.
