Field Hockey Team Tops UCSB 9-0

Oct. 9, 1999

STANFORD, Calif. - Freshman Christina Williams (Columbus, OH/The Columbus Academy) scored three times and sophomore Melissa Stai (San Diego, CA/Serra HS) scored twice to lead Stanford to a 9-0 win over UC Santa Barbara Saturday afternoon at Stanford's Varsity Turf Field. Because the Gauchos are not an NCAA varsity team, Stanford's record remains 4-5 on the year.

The Cardinal put on an impressive offensive barrage from the start, firing 36 shots in the first half and 23 more in the second. Stanford did not allow a shot for the second consecutive game. Senior Lindsey Dunagan (St. Louis, MO/St. Louis Country Day School), the Cardinal's leading scorer, started the scoring six minutes in on assists from freshmen Amanda Billmyer (Berwyn, PA/The Episcopal School) and Dalinda Banuelos (Escondido, CA/San Pasqual HS). Williams scored unassisted 10 minutes later, then Banuelos scored from junior Michelle Scott (Chicago, IL/Latin School) and sophomore Erica Swesey (Cherry Hill, NJ/Bishop Eustace HS). Williams scored from Stai, freshman Tysie Sawyer (Concord, MA//Phillips Academy) scored her first goal of the season on a penalty stroke, and Williams scored from Banuelos to complete a first half dominated by the Cardinal's freshmen and sophomores, who finished with seven goals and six assists on the day.

Stai converted a pass from senior Julie Gwozdz (Weston, MA/Phillip Academy) to open the second half, then scored unassisted 13 minutes later. Stanford's final tally was by Gwozdz off a penalty corner, with Banuelos picking up her third assist of the game.

The Cardinal returns to action Monday for a non-league game against Davidson College at 3 p.m.
