STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford head football coach Tyrone Willingham today was named one of 10 semifinalists nationwide for the 1999 Football News Coach of the Year award.

Willingham, who is attempting to lead Stanford to its first Rose Bowl appearance in 28 years, has his team in first place in the Pac-10 with a 5-1 record, 5-3 overall.

Football News will trim the field to three finalists on Monday, November 22. The official announcement of FN’s Coach of the Year will be made Wednesday, December 1. The recipient will be honored on Monday, January 31, 2000 at the National Athletic Awards ceremony at the Fox Theatre in Detroit, MI.

Now in his fifth season at Stanford, Willingham was a finalist for the Football News Coach of the Year award in 1995, his first at the helm of the Cardinal football program. That season, he was named Pac-10 Coach of the Year after leading Stanford to a 7-4-1 record and a trip to the Liberty Bowl.

The other semifinalists include: Frank Beamer (Virginia Tech), Bobby Bowden (Florida State), June Jones (Hawaii), Steve Logan (East Carolina), Glen Mason (Minnesota), Tom O’Brien (Boston College), Joe Paterno (Penn State), Jackie Sherrill (Mississippi State) and Bill Snyder (Kansas State).
