STANFORD, Calif. - No. 16 California got goals from five different players and Stanford converted a pair of penalty corners as the rivals advanced to the championship game of the NorPac Conference Field Hockey Tournament. California (11-4) defeated Southwest Missouri State (4-13) 5-0 and Stanford (9-8) beat Pacific (5-11) 2-0 to advance to Sunday's championship. The Golden Bears and the Cardinal have won every NorPac title in the 1990s. The tournament winner will play at UMass in an NCAA play-in game Tuesday.
In the day's first game, senior Lucy Durbin shattered the NorPac Tournament scoring record with five goals and an assist as Saint Louis beat Davis & Elkins 7-0 for fifth place. The Billikens avenged a 1-0 loss to the Senators on Oct. 24. Sophomore Kristen Burich added a goal and an assist for Saint Louis.
In the first semifinal, senior Sara Baron put Cal on the board seven minutes in on a rebound. Sophomore Amber Stockstill assisted on senior Kelli Mirassou's goal, then added one of her own. Sophomore Elizabeth Harkins made it 4-0 early in the second half and senior Megan Sainsbury, the NorPac's leading scorer in the regular season, finished the scoring.
In the day's third game, senior Julie Gwozdz (Weston, MA/Phillips Academy) scored directly off Stanford's second penalty corner of the game, with assists going to senior Sarah Medeiros (Davis, CA/Davis) and freshman Amanda Billmyer (Berwyn, PA/The Episcopal Academy). On Stanford's third penalty corner, freshman Amrit Chima (Ventura, CA/Buena) saw her shot saved, but freshman Dalinda Banuelos (Escondido, CA/San Pasqual) put in the rebound. It was the Cardinal's third win over the Tigers in 1999.
The NorPac Tournament concludes Sunday with the third-place game (Pacific-Southwest Missouri State) at 8:30 a.m. and the championship game (California-Stanford) at 11:00 a.m.
