No.2 Volleyball Survives Tough Four-Game Match At Arizona State

Tempe, Ariz. - Freshman Player of the Year candidate Logan Tom (Salt Lake City, UT/Highland HS) pounded 24 kills and posted a .378 attack percentage as No. 2 Stanford (22-2, 14-1 Pac-10) survived a difficult four-game Pac-10 women's volleyball match at Arizona State (12-11, 8-8 Pac-10). Stanford extends its win streak to 11 matches and has now won 21 of its last 22 contests overall. The Cardinal remains tied with UCLA in the loss column. The Bruins improved to 16-1 in the Pac-10 with a win over Oregon State tonight.

"Logan Tom played very well tonight and bailed us out of a few situations," commented Cardinal head coach Don Shaw, who improved his overall record to an NCAA-best 431-69 in his 500th match as Stanford's head coach.

The Cardinal won the first two games by scores of 15-11 and 15-7, despite trailing 7-0 and not scoring a point for the first 11 minutes of game one. The Sun Devils rallied for a hard-fought 15-13 victory in game three when sophomore outside hitter Jami Coughlin (Glendale, AZ/Moon Valley HS) knocked down a kill on ASU's eighth game-point.

Stanford rebounded for a 15-8 win in game four but did have to rally from an early 4-1 deficit.

Stanford finished with a team season-high 20 blocks, the third-highest total by a Pac-10 team this season. Sophomore middle blocker Tara Conrad (Torrance, CA/West HS) led the way with a Cardinal season-high of 13 blocks (three solos, 10 assists). Senior outside hitter Kerri Walsh (Saratoga, CA/Archbishop Mitty HS) added a season-high eight blocks to go with 11 kills and 14 digs in a near triple-double performance. Junior setter Lindsay Kagawa (Albany, CA/Albany HS) had a match-high 61 assists, just one shy of her career-high. Kagawa also added 18 digs.

The Cardinal will visit #18 Arizona on Saturday night (7:00 p.m.). The Wildcats are 16-8 overall and 10-5 in the Pac-10 (third-place) after beating California in four games tonight.
