Stanford, Calif. - The eighth-ranked Stanford women's soccer team defeated Cal Poly 3-1, behind a pair of goals by senior Kelly Adamson (Simi Valley, Calif.), in the second round of the 1999 NCAA College Cup at New Maloney Field in front of 1,852 fans.
The Cardinal (15-4-1) advance to the third round and will face the winner of the Notre Dame-Dayton game being played tomorrow in South Bend, Ind.
Stanford scored its first goal in the opening minute of play, when senior Ronnie Fair (Los Altos, Calif.) fed a streaking Adamson with a pass down the middle of the field. Adamson controlled the ball before sending it past Cal Poly goalkeeper Lauren Stevenson. The goal marked Adamson's first in five games.
Adamson beat Stevenson again in the 11th minute on passes from freshmen Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, Calif.) and Becky Myers (St. Charles, Ill.). The goal proved to be the game-winner and gave Adamson her first multi goal game of the season. Adamson has scored eight goals this season.
On the Cardinal's third and final goal of the game, in the 17th minute, Adamson earned her fifth point of the night by assisting on Wallis' 10th goal of the season. Adamson now has 21 points for the year.
"I was thinking before the game that this could be my last game at home because I'm a senior," Adamson said. "So it was a very emotional game. But you can't score any goals without great assists, and Ronnie (Fair) and Becky (Myers) just put it right on my foot."
Cal Poly tallied its lone goal of the game with only 55-seconds remaining in the game. The Mustangs' Gina Oceguera was fouled in the penalty box which resulted in a penalty kick scored by Kara Grandzik.
The win marked the first postseason victory for head coach Steve Swanson since arriving at Stanford in 1996. Swanson, the 1999 Pac-10 Coach of the Year, is now 1-2 in the NCAA tournament, making prior appearances in 1996 and 1998.
"We got out to a great start. But when you score a goal that quickly it takes the pressure off the other team and they continued to keep the pressure on us," Swanson said. "One of the things we wanted to do was score early and we did that."

Comments From The Press Conference Following Stanford's 3-1 Victory Over Cal Poly
Stanford Head Coach Steve Swanson's Opening Comments: "I have to give credit to Cal Poly, because I thought that they worked hard after going down 3-0. But we did a good job, because one of the things we wanted to do was score early and we did that. I think the goal by Kelly (Adamson) took their crowd (Cal Poly), which looked like a big crowd at first, out of the game. The goal in the first minute also settled us down and I think it was something that we needed and got. We did some good things on the night. I thought we needed to be patient offensively, because sometimes we get up early like that and we tend to go for the jugular, trying to get five or six goals. I thought we were forcing it at times and maybe should have moved the ball a little bit better. But anytime you get a win the tournament you have to be pleased, which we are."
After the three goals did Stanford pull back or did Cal Poly start playing better: Swanson ? "As a squad I think we're learning and trying to get better when teams drop back and defend in numbers. We can be impatient and struggle to find the seams at times. They did start to pressure a little bit more. Although you might think that they're down and the pressure is on them to come at us which they could of done, I think we had to move the ball and find the seams and work the ball around a little bit."

Was Adamson surprised that she was that wide open that quickly: "I was actually. It was early in the game and I think that their defense hadn't figured out our forward line and runs yet. It was good to get the goals early because I think they adjusted quite well later on in the game and we didn't have those opportunities."
Marcia Wallis describing her goal in the 11th minute: "Kelly (Adamson) turned with the ball and I ran across their back line and she slipped it perfectly through. I just let the ball run behind me and then had the goalkeeper one-on-one and just slotted it past her."
On playing the winner of Notre Dame-Dayton: Wallis ?"I think Dayton so that we have home field." Ronnie Fair ? "But it would be nice to have another shot at Notre Dame"
Swanson On playing Notre Dame in the preseason: "We actually mixed a lot of things up in that game because it was a game that we were trying to look at our full squad, trying to sort out individuals at that time and the roles that those players would take. From our perspective we really didn't put many things together for that game. It was certainly early and if we would of won 4-0, I wouldn't of been that excited. I think we would like to play Notre Dame, but when you get to this stage of the tournament, with the pairings that you have, your going to play someone good. There all going to be games now. If it's Notre Dame, fine. If it's Dayton, fine. I think we feel confident at this point."
