STANFORD, Calif. - No. 1 Stanford and No. 5 California renewed anannual Big Game week tradition, competiting in the double-distance meetThursday afternoon at deGuerre Pool. The Stanford 800 free relay team ofjunior Adam Messner (Ann Arbor, MI/Dexter HS), freshman John Waters(Greenwich, CT/Greenwich HS), junior Clayton Jones (Coral Springs,FL/Princeton University) and freshman Greg Long (Reston, VA/South Lakes HS)broke the meet and pool records, Waters broke the meet record in the 400 freestyle, and Golden Bear sophomore Andrew Chanbroke the meet record in the 400 breaststroke. The meet was unscored.

Stanford sophomore Reid Gustin (Cincinnati, OH/St. Xavier) openedthe meet by winning the 2000 freestyle in a one-two-three Stanford sweep.Waters then took the 400 free in 3:33.31 as Stanford went one-two, and junior StevenBrown (Reno, NV/Reno HS) won the 800 IM, edging 1999 Pac-10 400 IM champRatapong Sirisanont of Cal by .01 second. Cal sophomore Hiro Sakoda won the400 butterfly, but Cardinal freshman Randall Bal (Fair Oaks, CA/Bella VistaHS) captured the 400 backstroke. Chan then swam a meet record of 4:17.47 toclaim the 400 breast title, setting the stage for the final relay. Fromabout 300 yards through 700 yards, the Stanford and Cal "A" teams were neckand neck, but Stanford's Long pulled away over the last 100 to secure thewin. Both teams came in under the meet and pool records.

The Cardinal returns to action at deGuerre Pool on Friday, hostingSan Francisco State and Cal State Bakersfield in a three-way dual meet at2:00 p.m. non-scoring (short-course yards)
