Stanford, Calif. - No. 2 Stanford (24-2, 16-1 Pac-10) moved into a first-place tie with idle UCLA (24-2, 16-1 Pac-10) after the Cardinal trounced Washington State (13-12, 7-10 Pac-10) in three straight games at Maples Pavilion. Stanford will close out its regular season by hosting Washington (8-16, 4-12 Pac-10) on Friday night in a match to be televised live by FOX Sports Net. A win tomorrow night will guarantee the five-time defending Pac-10 champion Cardinal of at least a co-title. A Cardinal win combined with a UCLA loss at third-place USC tomorrow night would give Stanford its sixth straight outright title.
Tonight's 15-0, 15-11, 15-5 win extended Stanford's home win streak to 40 matches. National Freshman of the Year candidate Logan Tom (Salt Lake City, UT/Highland HS) once again led the Cardinal with 14 kills and an impressive .435 attack percentage (14-4-23). Freshman outside hitter Lindsey Yamasaki (Oregon City, OR/Oregon City HS) had a team-high nine digs and also added seven kills.
Washington State was paced by freshman middle blocker Holly Harris (Sandy, UT/Skyline HS) with six kills.
Tonight's match was never in question as the Cardinal blanked Washington State in game one and scored 18 unanswered points before the Cougars finally got on the scoreboard early in game two. Washington State actually stayed with Stanford in the second game and led 11-10 before the Cardinal closed out the game with five straight points. The Cardinal jumped out to a 12-1 advantage in game three and was never challenged.
The Cardinal outhit the Cougars (.294 - .011).
