Women's Basketball Opens Season With 75-64 Win at USF

Nov. 19, 1999

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Junior Carolyn Moos (Wayzata, MN/Blake School) had 16 points and 12 rebounds and sophomore Enjoli Izidor (Seattle, WA/Roosevelt HS) added a career-high 14 points to lead Stanford University to a 75-64 season-opening road win over the University of San Francisco on Friday night at Memorial Gymnasium.

The Cardinal returns to action on Sunday when it hosts seventh-ranked Iowa State at 2:00 p.m. at Maples Pavilion.

Stanford took the lead for good with an 8-0 run just 7:31 into the contest that gave it a 14-8 advantage. Izidor, who also had seven rebounds, had two baskets in the run and assisted on a third.

The visitors broke the game wide open with a 12-0 run late in the first half for a commanding 32-15 advantage. Stanford eventually took a 40-24 halftime lead, after holding the Dons to just 7-of-26 shooting from the floor (.289 percent) in the opening 20 minutes. The Cardinal also blocked six first half shots and forced 13 Don turnovers.

Moos then helped the Cardinal continue to pull away early in the second half with six points in the opening six minutes. The junior center had eight points and seven rebounds in 13 minutes of second half action en route to the seventh double-double of her collegiate career.

Stanford's lead peaked at 55-34 on one of freshman Jamie Carey's (Thornton, CO/Horizon HS) three 3-pointers, but the Dons stormed back behind five second half 3-pointers of their own. The hosts cut the lead to seven (70-63) with 1:37 remaining, but managed just one point the rest of the way. A layup by Lauren St. Clair (Philadelphia, PA/St. Joseph's Academy) and two free throws by Milena Flores (Snohomish, WA/Snohomish HS) over the next 28 seconds put the game out of reach.

Sophomore center Cori Enghusen (Bothell, WA/Inglemoor HS) contributed a career-high 12 points for the Cardinal, while Carey added nine and sophomore Bethany Donaphin (New York, NY/Horace Mann HS) had eight points and five rebounds.
