Santa Clara, Calif. - No. 2 Stanford (26-2) defeated Santa Clara (20-10) in a women's volleyball non-conference victory as both teams closed out their 1999 regular seasons. Final game scores were 15-7, 15-12, 15-5. Stanford has now won 15 straight matches and 25 of its last 26. Stanford has defeated Santa Clara in all 17 meetings between the schools. Santa Clara drops its second straight overall after a prior six-match win streak.
Stanford was paced by Pac-10 Player of the Year Kerri Walsh (Saratoga, CA/Archbishop Mitty HS) with 16 kills and seven blocks. Pac-10 Freshman of the Year Logan Tom (Salt Lake City, UT/Highland HS) also made another big contribution with 15 kills, a match-high 16 digs and four blocks. Junior middle blocker Jennifer Detmer (Thousand Oaks, CA/Thousand Oaks HS) posted eight blocks, while junior setter Lindsay Kagawa (Albany, CA/Albany HS) had 38 assists.
Stanford had another big match at the nets, outblocking Santa Clara (14.0 - 5.0). The Cardinal has now reached the double-digit mark for blocks 20 times this season.
The Cardinal was forced to stage mild comebacks in all three games this evening. Santa Clara held early leads of 5-3 (game one), 6-1 (game two) and 2-0 (game three).
The Broncos were paced by junior outside hitter Ynez Carrasco (Visalia, CA/Redwood HS) with 15 kills, while senior outside hitter Laura Raybould (Sunnyvale, CA/Homestead HS) added 11 kills and a team-high 11 digs in her final regular season home match.
The Cardinal, co-Pac-10 champions and the conference's automatic NCAA berth recipient, along with the Broncos will find out their NCAA Tournament seedings this Sunday when the 64-team field is announced on the 1999 NCAA Women's Volleyball Selection Show. The show begins at 7:00 pm (PST) and can be seen live on DirecTV and the Dish Network.
