STANFORD, Calif. - Senior Zach Zimmerer (Billings, MT/Billings Central) recorded a pin at 133 pounds to lead Stanford to a 26-9 win over San Francisco State Tuesday night at Stanford's Burnham Pavilion. The Cardinal improves to 1-2 overall while the Gators fall to 0-2.
Freshman Isaiah Camp (Hubbard, OR/North Marion) opened with a win at 149 pounds for the Cardinal, then seniors Warren McPherson (Hillsboro, OR/Hillsboro) and Clay Hackerman (Houston, TX/Kinkaid), scored victories at 157 and 165 to make it 9-0. Freshman Mauricio Wright won at 174 pounds for the Gators, but freshman Rohner Segnitz (Monte Sereno, CA/Los Gatos) and sophomore Andy Hunter (Sacramento, CA/Hiram Johnson) won back-to-back matches to make the team score 16-3.
S.F. State senior Terry Tuzzolino won at heavyweight, but then two-time NCAA qualifier Rudy Ruiz (S. Milwuakee, WI/Thomas More) and three-time NCAA qualifier Zimmerer won at 125 and 133, respectively, to put the contest out of reach. Zimmerer improved to 7-0 on the young season. In the night's final match, at 141 pounds, Gator junior Rich Dixon posted a 9-8 win to make the final score 26-9.
The Cardinal is off for the remainder of the fall, returning to action on Dec. 29 & 30 at the Midlands Invitational at Northwestern. The Gators will next compete against the Colorado School of Mines and the University of the Pacific on Thursday, Dec. 2 in Las Vegas, Nev.
