STANFORD, Calif. - Senior guard Milena Flores joined an elite group when she became only the fourth Stanford women's basketball player to reach the 500 career assist mark. She broke the 500-mark during the Cardinal's 77-65 win over Saint Mary's on Monday, Dec. 27 at Maples Pavilion. Flores finished the game with 14 pointsl, a career-high nine steals and four assists.
The Cardinal were led in scoring by sophomore forward Bethany Donaphin, who had 21 points. Donaphin also led Stanford in rebounding with seven. Two-sport athlete Lindsey Yamasaki played in her first game of the season after finishing the volleyball season. Yamasaki posted three points, two rebounds, one blocked shot and two steals.
The name of the game was defense as the Cardinal held the Gaels to a scoring drought for over four minutes in the first half. Stanford forced 27 Saint Mary's turnovers, and recorded four blocked shots and a season-high 18 steals. On the offense, Stanford shot 50 percent from the field (26-52) while holding Saint Mary's to a shooting percentage of 35.2 (19-54).
The Saint Mary's defense stepped up in the second half, holding Stanford at 56 points for over five minutes. Tracy Morris recorded a season-high 25 points against the Cardinal, and posted her third double-double of the season with 10 rebounds.
Stanford's record improves to 5-3. Saint Mary's record stands at 6-4.
Stanford will travel to Utah on Dec. 29 to take on the Utah Utes. The Cardinal will return home again on Jan. 2 to host Colorado before beginning conference play at Arizona State on Jan. 6.
