Softball Squad Splits Doubleheader with Cal

Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford University Softball team split a Pac-10doubleheader with #14 California on Saturday afternoon at the StanfordSoftball Complex. The #9 Cardinal took game one by a 5-0 score, thendropped game two by a 4-3 decision. With the win, Stanford moves to 29-8overall, 2-4 in the Pac-10, while California goes to 28-9, 1-4 in thePac-10.

In the first game, Stanford scored two unearned runs in the thirdinning to take a 2-0 lead. With one out, freshman Jessica Mendoza had aground out to second base which scored junior Kellie Wiginton, who reachedon a error by Cal shortstop Katie May. Senior Michelle Schneider then camecame around to score when May overthrew first base with two outs. TheCardinal later added three more insurance runs in the fifth inning. Aftertwo of the first three batters reached base, Schneider singled home seniorJennie Foyle to make it 3-0. Mendoza then followed with another single,which scored Wiginton and Schneider to provide the final margin of victory.The five runs is all Stanford would need as senior Marcy Crouch shutdownthe Golden Bears for the 21st shutout of her career. Thoush she got introble early in the game, Crouch (16-4) kept her composure as she limitedCal to four hits and gave up just one walk while taking the win.

Game two was a seesaw battle which finally resulted in a 4-3victory for the Golden Bears. Though Stanford had leads of 1-0 and 2-1, Calresponded with three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. Withtwo outs, right fielder Pauline Duenas singled and then stole second. Aftera walk to Lisa Iancin put runners on first and second, catcher MegumiTakasaki doubled down the left field line to knot the game at two. Next up,designated player Holly Yost singled to center, which scored Iancin andTakasaki for the two-run advantage. However, the Cardinal soon battledback. A solo home run by sophomore Jenni Shideler in the fifth broughtStanford within a run. Later in the game, the Cardinal had runners on firstand second with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Unfortunately, aline drive by Mendoza was caught at the right field fence by Duenas to endthe game.

Stanford returns to action this Tuesday, April 6th, when the teamtravels to Sacramento State for a non-conference doubleheader. The Cardinalthen returns home next Saturday, April 10th, when it hosts Oregon State inPac-10 twin bill. Both doubleheaders will begin at 1:00 pm.
