STANFORD, Calif. - Sophomore Kelly Shouey (Concord, CA/Carondelet) scored the first two goals of the game and senior goalie Heather Crary (Atherton, CA/Menlo School) led a strong defense as No. 4 Stanford (19-5) beat No. 8 UC Davis (21-8) 4-1 at deGuerre Pool Friday afternoon. The game was the final home contest for Cardinal seniors Crary, Lindsay Tam (Honolulu, HI/Punahou) and Nicole Glazer (Miami, FL/Ransom Everglades).
Shouey started the scoring with an outside shot while Stanford had a 6-on-5 advantage 2:53 into the game. Shouey scored again from two meters midway through the second quarter, and freshman Kate Pettit (Bainbridge Island, WA/Bainbridge) scored on a pass from sophomore Anne-Marie Keenan (Woodside, CA/Menlo School) with 1:08 left before halftime.
Freshman Margie Dingeldein (Merced, CA/Merced) scored her team-leading 36th goal on a breakaway set up by a long outlet pass from Crary to make the score 4-0 at 4:46 left in the third. Senior Alice Wallace (Corte Madera, CA/Redwood) scored 98 seconds later to get the Aggies on the board. Crary finished with five saves as the senior class improved to 28-8 at deGuerre Pool over the last four years. Sophomore Alli Henry (Palos Verdes, CA/Chadwick School) recorded one save for the Cardinal after Stanford's seniors exited together with 1:08 remaining in the game. Senior Molly Morris (Novato, CA/Santa Rosa JC) had seven saves for the Aggies.
Both teams return to action next week at the Northern California regional qualifier, April 24-25 at the University of the Pacific. That tournament will feature six teams fighting for four berths to the collegiate national championships. Stanford will face Cal State Bakersfield at noon on April 24 while UC Davis will meet the Roadrunners at 8:30 that morning. The Cardinal and the Aggies will square off again at 3:00 p.m. next Saturday, with playoffs on Sunday. Collegiate nationals are May 7-9 at UC Davis.
