STANFORD, Calif. - For the second straight year, the fifth-ranked Stanford women's tennis team knocked out No. 14 Arkansas in the first round of the USTA/ITA Women's National Indoor Team Championship, this year by a score of 6-1.
Stanford improved to 12-0 in WNITC first-round play. The defending team champion sports one of the youngest squads in the country, putting four freshman in its lineup. Cardinal freshman Marissa Irvin played her first match since winning the Rolex Natinal Intercollegiate Indoor Championships Feb. 4-7. She defeated Arkansas' Chin Bee Khoo, 6-4, 6-3. Irvin, the second-ranked player in the NCAA, is now 22-2 on the season. Teammate Teryn Ashley reached the 20-win mark with her 6-4, 6-1 win over Maria Pavlidou.
The WNITC is now in its 12th year at the University of Wisconsin. Eight of the top 10 teams, according to the ITA, are attending. Stanford has competed at this tournament each of those years and boasts a 37-7 record.
The event, held at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium at the University of Wisconsin Madison, continues through Sunday. Stanford will face No. 10 William & Mary in the quarterfinals at 2:30 p.m.
