Water Polo Team Defeats San Jose State

SAN DIEGO, CA - Top-ranked Stanford defeated No. 10 San Jose State 7-4 Friday afternoon in pool play at the UC San Diego Invitational in San Diego, Calif. Sophomore Dani Bell (Long Beach, CA/Wilson), the Cardinal's leading returning scorer, scored three times for Stanford, which never trailed. It was Bell's fourth career three-goal game, including one against the Spartans last season. Junior Elissa Keszler (Lodi, CA/Tokay) and sophomores Hilary Gallogly (Orinda, CA/Miramonte), Anne-Marie Keenan (Woodside, CA/Menlo School) and Kelly Shouey (Concord, CA/Carondelet) all scored once for Stanford, which improves to 2-0.

San Jose State falls to 1-1 with the loss. Earlier in the day the Spartans shocked No. 6 UC Santa Barbara 6-0 in the only upset on the first day of the tournament. Liz Garcia scored five times against the Gauchos for San Jose State but was held scoreless by the Cardinal.

Stanford finishes pool play against No. 6 UC Santa Barbara Saturday at 9:10 a.m. and will play another match Saturday afternoon. San Jose State will play either once or twice Saturday, depending on the outcome of the Stanford-UCSB contest. The tournament concludes Sunday.
