STANFORD, CA - Stanford defeated Division II power Kutztown 40-3 Tuesday night at Burnham Pavilion. Junior Zach Zimmerer (Billings, MT/Billings Central), ranked 15th nationally, won by pin and senior Beau Weiner (Placerville, CA/Ponderosa) won by technical fall to lead the Cardinal (4-3) past the Golden Bears (0-7), who are currently ranked sixth nationally in Division II.
Sophomore Justin McNicholas (Stroudsburg, PA/Pocono Mountain) got Kutztown on the board by winning the first match, at 174 pounds. But Stanford junior Tim Kendall (Colorado Springs, CO/Palmer) won due to an injury forfeit late in the first period at 184 pounds in the next match, and the Cardinal just kept rolling. Highlights included Zimmerer's fourth straight dual victory, the win by true freshman Kenji Arai (Santa Clara, CA/Bellarmine Prep) over sophomore All-American Kohlby O'Donnell (Allentown, PA/Dieruff) at 141, and junior Rudy Ruiz's (S. Milwaukee, WI/Thomas More) win over sixth-ranked freshman Brian Burzynski (Pen Argyl, PA/Pen Argyl).
Stanford returns to action this Saturday and Sunday at the Aggie Open, at UC-Davis. The Cardinal will be back in Burnham Pavilion on Saturday, Jan. 23 to host Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo at 7:00 p.m. Kutztown continues its West Coast swing Wednesday at San Francisco State, squaring off with the Gators and Portland State, beginning at noon.
