STANFORD, Calif. - Sophomore Kelly Shouey (Concord, CA/Carondelet) scored three goals in the second half to lead No. 2 Stanford past No. 8 UC Santa Barbara at deGuerre Pool Wednesday. The Cardinal improves to 15-2 overall with its seventh consecutive victory. Stanford is 8-0 in MPSF play with one game remaining, at home against No. 1 USC (6-1) Saturday, The Gauchos fall to 7-11, 1-6. It was the teams' second meeting of the year, with Stanford also winning the first, 6-1, on Feb. 13.

The Gauchos, who lost their fourth straight, opened up leads of 1-0 and 3-2 before going into halftime tied at three. Shouey earned a four-meter penalty shot 19 seconds into the second half, and converted, to put the Cardinal ahead for good. One minute, 42 seconds later Shouey fought off a triple-team to earn another four-meter shot, and converted again for a 5-3 lead and her sixth multiple-goal game of the season. Junior Lynn Nisbet (Goleta, CA) scored on a 6-on-5 power play to bring the Gauchos within one late in the third, but sophomore Hilary Gallogly (Orinda, CA/Miramonte) scored on a perfect lob shot 21 seconds later to increase the Cardinal lead to 6-4 after three periods.

With 5:35 remaining in the game, Nisbet scored again on a shot deflected by a Stanford defender to cut the Cardinal lead to one. But Shouey scored on a quick backhand shot with 2:14 remaining and Stanford's defense held the lead. Senior Heather Crary (Atherton, CA/Menlo School) made four of her eight saves in the fourth quarter to preserve the win.

Sophomores Kris Koblik (Davis, CA/Davis), and Dani Bell (Long Beach, CA/Wilson) and senior Nicole Glazer (Miami, FL/Ransom Everglades) scored for the Cardinal in the first half. Koblik scored on a four-meter penalty shot, while Bell and Glazer both scored in 6-on-5 situations. Stanford was two of three with the man advantage while UCSB was only two for seven on 6-on-5s. Both teams were perfect on four-meter penalty shots, with Stanford scoring three times and UCSB scoring once. Freshman Kelly Tiffany (San Diego, CA), the Gauchos' leading scorer, also tallied twice for UCSB, converting a 6-on-5 in the first period and scoring on a penalty shot in the second. Junior Holly Rodrigues (San Jose, CA) scored in the second quarter for UCSB's other goal.

Stanford concludes MPSF play Saturday at deGuerre Pool against No. 1 USC at noon. The game will decide the league's regular-season champion. UC Santa Barbara hosts No. 11 Long Beach State Friday (4:00 p.m.) and No. 6 San Diego State Saturday (noon).
